Over the past year, Joseph Adams, M.Ed., BCBA, Founder of Adams Behavioral Consulting, has experienced a period of rapid growth. But that growth didn’t happen overnight. It was built on the foundation he established while navigating the early challenges of running an ABA practice.

Like many practice owners, Joseph had to balance clinical work with the demands of running a business. Relying on disconnected systems and time-intensive workflows had him working 80-hour weeks, a pace that was unsustainable and left him at risk of burnout.

After transitioning to CR Essentials, an all-in-one platform for small and startup ABA practices, everything began to shift. His workload became more manageable, workflows were streamlined across his team, and the practice gained stronger compliance and improved efficiency.

Since first sharing his story last year, those improvements have compounded, driving remarkable growth at Adams Behavioral Consulting:

  • Client intake has doubled
  • Two additional BCBAs have joined the team
  • Demand has increased so rapidly that the practice now maintains a growing waitlist
Founder Story: From Special Education to Business Owner

Joseph began his career in education, spending 15 years as a special education teacher. When he transitioned into the ABA field, that foundation played a defining role in how he built and structured his practice.

“I was a special education teacher five years ago, and it was just natural to kind of work more in a school system initially. So where I started my business".
- Joseph Adams, M.Ed., BCBA, Founder of Adams Behavioral Consulting

He initially built his practice rooted in school-based services and real-world needs. As Adams Behavioral Consulting grew, Joseph remained committed to a deeply personal approach to care, recognizing that every child and family has unique needs that require a tailored approach. Every learner holds potential, and his goal is to empower them with the skills they need to achieve that potential.

Joseph also brings a unique perspective as a male in a female-dominated field, where men account for fewer than 12% of BCBAs, according to BACB demographic data. “Parents don’t get an opportunity to see the male perspective on certain treatment plan things,” he explained.

For Joseph, the work goes beyond clinical outcomes. “My 20 client caseload, those are all my sons.” That mindset continues to guide his growth, ensuring that even as his business scales, the quality of care and personal connection remain at the center.

Why CR Essentials: Built for Growing Teams

As demand for services at Adams Behavioral Consulting grew, so did the operational pressures behind the scenes. What had once been manageable quickly became more complex, from training new RBTs to keeping up with documentation, scheduling, and clinical responsibilities.

Sustaining growth without overwhelming his team or sacrificing quality was a central challenge. With CR Essentials in place, Adams was able to seamlessly build on existing workflows while maintaining high standards of care, enabling thoughtful growth.

Ease of use has proved to be a major advantage, especially when training new staff. “It’s very practical,” he explained. “It allows us to cut some time off training.”

But CR Essentials isn’t just about efficiency in training. It supports both clinical and operational decision-making. “What I love is the data, the graphical display of the data,” Joseph explained.

“It [CR Essentials] really helps me in IEP meetings. I can easily pull up the data and goals. It’s very helpful.”
- Joseph Adams, M.Ed., BCBA, Founder of Adams Behavioral Consulting

The impact has been tangible:

  • Audit readiness has strengthened with AI-powered documentation that improves consistency and payor compliance.
  • Supervision is more consistent and effective, with better visibility into learner and staff progress.
  • Communication with caregivers has improved through the parent portal, enabling families to stay informed and engaged throughout their child’s treatment process.

Empowering his team with the tools needed to work smarter has enabled Joseph to focus less on administrative burdens and more on driving quality clinical outcomes and thoughtfully scaling the practice.

Turning Time Saved into Business Growth

One of the greatest game-changers for Adams Behavioral Consulting has continued to be AI-driven documentation. As Joseph shared in a 2025 blog on AI in action, implementing AI-powered session notes eliminated a major administrative burden while significantly improving staff satisfaction.

“We’re moving into a newer generation of RBTs, and they love the time that AI saves on session notes”.
- Joseph Adams, M.Ed., BCBA, Founder of Adams Behavioral Consulting

What once took 15 minutes for his staff to generate a session note now takes just 1-2 minutes! By simplifying the process, notes are completed accurately, on time, and in compliance with payor requirements. This consistency not only reduces administrative strain, but also strengthens audit readiness, giving Joseph greater confidence as his practice scales.

The broader impact has been time recovery at the leadership level. When Joseph started out as a small practice owner, he had to navigate countless responsibilities across operations and clinical oversight. He previously explained“When you first start out as a small business owner, you’re doing everything. And when I say everything, I mean everything–from scheduling to checking session notes to billing to contacting parents, on top of providing supervision and training your RBTs.”

Building upon a strong foundation with a unified platform, Joseph has been able to shift from reactive problem-solving to strategic growth.

I’m able to spend that time by opening up a different branch, opening up adult services. Now I’m able to just do more”.
- Joseph Adams, M.Ed., BCBA, Founder of Adams Behavioral Consulting

Looking Ahead: Expanding into Adult Services

With a strong foundation in place, Joseph’s next focus is on expanding services for adults, an often underserved population. “What kind of keeps me up is, after 21, what’s next?” Joseph shared. “It’s the adult population; how can I serve that?”

To better support those underserved populations, Adams Behavioral Consulting will be expanding into adult day programs, group homes, and home health over the next few years. At the same time, they'll continue growing their children’s services across Georgia and beyond.

What began as a solo founder managing every aspect of the business has evolved into a scalable organization with increased capacity, streamlined operations, and a growing waitlist for services. Today, Joseph is focused on expanding access to care at scale, ensuring more individuals and families can receive timely, high-quality support.
